Disease

An autoimmune disease called alopecia areata happens when your immune system attacks hair follicles along with other healthy parts of your body, causing hair to fall out suddenly. When you have alopecia areata, you may notice one or many patches of baldness, usually across the scalp. However, you can lose hair in any place on your body that grows hair.

Mental Health

Some forms of hair loss are triggered by stress. A type of hair loss that can be associated with high levels of stress is called trichotillomania. It is an impulse-control disorder characterized by compulsive hair pulling, which is often induced by stress, tension, loneliness, boredom, or frustration. Teenagers usually experience this kind of hair loss, which results in bald patches on the scalp, or missing eyebrows, eyelashes, or body hair.

Drug Treatments

Certain drugs can contribute to hair loss. Drug-induced hair loss is reversible once you stop taking the medication in question. If you’re someone who experiences drug-induced alopecia, you may notice thinning instead of patchy hair loss. One of the best-known causes of drug-induced hair loss is chemotherapy. However, some medications can cause hair loss at different stages of the hair growth cycle including these:

  • Antidepressants
  • Anticonvulsants (epilepsy drugs)
  • Anti-hypertensives (beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, and diuretics)
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

Infections

Ringworm is a fungal infection that can appear anywhere on the skin. If it develops on the scalp, it can cause patches of hair loss known as tinea capitis. Typically, it begins as a tiny blister that slowly expands in size, leaving behind scaly spots of temporary baldness. The fungus enters hair fibers of the affected area, wherein hairs become brittle and break off. Affected areas are characterized by itchy, red inflammation. Scaly patches caused by this infection are usually redder around the exterior with a more normal skin tone in the center. This creates the appearance of a ring, hence the name ringworm.

Male Pattern Baldness

Male pattern baldness (also called androgenetic alopecia) is the most common type of hair loss in men, usually caused by genetics or having a family history of baldness.

According to research, male pattern baldness is closely related to male sex hormones called androgen, which has many functions including regulating hair growth. With male pattern baldness, your hair growth cycle begins to weaken and causes hair follicles to shrink, producing shorter and finer strands of hair. Eventually, the growth cycle for each hair stops, and hair regrowth won’t take place.
